So Twitter has a rumor that Harry’s NATO briefing was faked yesterday.
Here’s the NATO press release about his appearance.
Tumblr media
Link
Let’s not accuse government organizations of participating in harebrained Sussex PR shenanigans.
This is nothing more than Harry finally doing his job for Invictus Games. My guess is he’s looking to tie Invictus to another government or official body to extend its shelf-life. He must be having trouble lining up sponsors for Vancouver or future hosts.
It’s a little surprising that he’s going after NATO instead of the UN but I guess it makes sense. The UN’s military presence is focused on peacekeeping and humanitarian aid where NATO’s military work is more defense-oriented with combat coalitions that’a in line with Invictus’s mission and platform.
But honestly, all this really does is remind me of the episode from The West Wing where Bartlet wants the UN Security Council to support his peacekeeping deal with Israel and Palestine but they’re not buying it so CJ goes after NATO instead. So it makes me wonder whether Harry went to the UN first (after all, he’s been there a few times), they told him no, and he changed tactics to go after NATO, inviting them to London for the anniversary thing.
Anyway. Off to get all the finest muffins and bagels in the land.

Underrated OFMD fics!
So I've thought of compiling a list of good but unpopular OFMD fics. There are many recommendation posts going around, but they mostly feature the same 10 authors (who are great, do not get me wrong!) - I have thought, however, that less popular writers need some exposure too!
I have tried to keep the selection varied, with different ratings, fic lengths and ships. Feel free to reblog to increase the exposure of these creative people! :)
The Recommendations:
Snubs and Explanations by MzDany - T, 1,7k words, Ed/Stede. A funny little fic in which a Dutch merchant is offended by the Revenge not attacking his ship and goes there to investigate..
Le Bel Homme sans Merci by GeorgieBlossom - G, 296 words, Ed/Stede. A poem based on John Keats' La Belle Dame Sans Merci.
The Winning Prize by Birdie_Lo_Green - M, 24k words, unfinished yet, Ed/CJ, Ed/Izzy (unrequited). A multichapter story set when Ed, Izzy and Calico Jack are young and stupid.
Sunkissed by Spineless_Lobster - G, 709 words, Ed/Stede. A short ficlet full of tooth-rotting fluff!
Scylla's arms, Charybdis' mouth by Wrizard - T, 1136 words, no ships, Trans Izzy. A fic in which the Kraken is an actual deep sea creature and young Izzy Hands is a sacrifice for him.
Windward Passage by Consultingcrybaby - E, 4.7k words, Ed/Stede. To quote the author: "In which Stede is astonished by the existence of buttfucking, and Ed really needs a cup of tea."
WHERE'S THE LOOT?! A Choose-Your-Own-Adventure Game by glitterpig. T, Ed/Stede. It is literally a game!
A Demon Lived in My Brow by Bazzle. E, CW: some non-con, 8.7k words, Ed/CJ, Ed/OC, Ed/Izzy, Ed/Stede. Snapshots of Ed's relationships - and sexual experiences - before he met Stede.
Leather by Chocolatepot. G, 100 words drabble with Ed and Stede, taking place in episode 04.
To Make Pan-puddings by Whatthefoucault. T, 2.5k words, Ed/Stede. In which Stede find an old recipe and wants to cook it for Ed. Fluff!
They Haven't Made the Color Yet That'll Paint Over Every Part of Your Past by Parsnips (trifles). G, 1.4k words, Mary/Doug. A lovely fic about Doug and his love for Mary.
Orange You Glad by Lesspale. Not rated but imho G. 3.3k words, mostly Roach. A wholesome fic about the origins of the 50 orange cake!
Just Let Go, My Party Piece by red-sky-in-mourning. M, 4.3 words, Stede/Ed, some Lucius/Pete and Jim/Oluwande. A ficlet inspired by the well-known s2 bts photo of a possibly special necklace.
Two pints of Guinness, a packet of crisps (and a bag of cans) by Buoymehome (Lilibel) - T, 3.4k words, Modern AU, found family. Wee John and Stede go for a pint for St Stephen Day and Stede strikes conversation with the handsome looking fiddle player.
Lucius Returns by Scaredycattales - T, 367 words. Lucius, Ed. Screenplay format! Criminally underrated.
Learning Curve by Lwwyrd - M, 13k words, Izzy-centered. Young Edward Teach and Israel Hands meet, and the rest is in the hands of Fate. Written for the Fate & Fortune challenge.
The Night That Has No End by FrazzledWriter - M, 1.2k words, horror. Frenchie POV. Everyone on the Revenge is being driven into madness by a mysterious fog, and only a few are still sane. Ambiguous ending.
The Other First Mate by Dorie22 - G, 1.5k words. After episode 05. Ed is confused about his feelings and Stede, and Buttons turns out to be an unexpectingly good listener.
Room People by Moonandsunlight - G, 1.1k words. A short fic exploring the queerplatonic relationship between Wee John and Frenchie.
Much Ado About Something by Winter_of_our_Discontent - T, 528 words, Ed/Stede. Shakespearean AU. Super hilarious.
A Lighthouse To Each Other; or, Cracking Up On The Rocks by Zmayhem - T, 12k words, Mary/Stede. A fic exploring the relations between Mary and Stede after their 10 years of marriage.
What Makes The Man by Unovis - T, 12k words, unfinished yet. A fantastic character study of Stede and the conversations he has with his barber.
Wee John Feeney's Excellent Day by Activevirtues - T, 2.7k words. A criminally underrated fic about a fantastic day that Wee John has and the joy it gives him. Super wholesome!
The Saint of Never Getting It Right by Goldblooded - G, 3k words. Ed's POV. Interesting choice of formatting, adding to the story. A short fic about Ed and his emotional issues.
Skeleton Crew Drabbles by Tipsy_Kitty - mostly T, a collection of short drabbles written for a Halloween event. It has canon ones, and AU ones. Some hilarious, some a bit more emotional.
One Thousand Sea Creatures: a Buttons OFMD SMAU by Idiotatsea, Loopydangerfrom and Otsanda - T, 23k words. A Scollection of posts from Buttons' twitter account, his Moon Journal and other media. He does try to list 1000 sea creatures, and it is hilarious.
Nostalgia by HopelessScribe - G, 1.6k words. A BEAUTIFUL pre-canon fic about Roach's childhood memories and his North African background. Criminally underrated so give the writer your kudo!
More recommendations to follow next week!

Something like that isn't like that, a fact that she's fairly quick to explain. Not a whore but not a sailor. He's had worse gigs than that himself. The wretched beginning to his story - a promising career in the King's Navy, built entirely upon the lies of a self-worshipping man who Izzy knows only now had no intention to ever let him rise beyond his station as Assistant, more than likely intended to push him below it. He'd have chained himself up in his own loyalty if it weren't for the fateful slaughter of his mates and his own capture that led him into kissing the decks and just barely keeping his hide untanned on the pirate ship he'd one day burn to the ground in retribution.
Not a soul knows where he came from, not even Edward. None living, anyways. He'd surely be fucking ruined if there were. He can count the number on one hand that know the sort of rotten slavery he was subjected to on Hornigold's vessel, and that'll stay that way, unless they want to die in righteous fire too. Is he the right hand of Lucifer himself? Debatable. But he's certainly tasted Hell.
Not a whore but not a sailor. Could be worse. Much worse.
He's surprised though, as she goes on - not at the potential that she may or may not have had in life, just that she shares it. Pasts aren't a thing often offered to each other as pirates. There's no one who knows his history before sixteen years old. Maybe that's why he's still alive.
" 'S funny how they praise and fear us for being devils, isn't it? Then turn around and damn Satan's angels for the same, " Izzy murmurs, glancing at the redhead and put in mind of fire itself. He's always liked fire. The sounds of it, the way it moves. He likes the way she's pissed, too. She has a right to be. He can't imagine being fucked over by the whole modern world and then fucked over again by the land of piracy just for having a cunt.
Silence falls and Izzy remembers the few female pirates he's encountered in his life. Never really made it anywhere, any of 'em. Fighting thrice the battle. Give them a leg up, they might have a chance to be something. Surely he and Edward have enough of a reputation by now to quell rumors of witchcraft if there were a woman aboard? Edward's more of a witch than any woman he's ever met.
As if to underline the point, she speaks again - what the fuck her name was, Izzy can't remember, if she had a name at all in the rumors - asking after Blackbeard with fear and reverence in her tone.
" Always. " He's been sailing with the Devil, his Edward, since before he had the beard they all know him for. Since they were boys. The moment Edward became Captain, he became first mate, before the timber of the ship they'd mutinied even turned to ash. They'd stolen away on the best ship in the fleet. Docked on an island in an hour. There in the golden sunlight, warm on a tropical beach he'd been Christened. First Mate Hands.
" He's . . . "
Edward's touch. The look in his eye he gets when he's got one of his crazy ideas in mind. There's not a one that slips by that Izzy doesn't think he's following his captain right into Death's hand, but by the luck of what just might truly be a devil -- they make it through to the land of the living, every time. There's reverance in Izzy's voice too, in his gaze as he stares out at nothing, considering.
" I don't think the Devil would impress him very much. " It's a genuine assessment, not just a way to stoke Blackbeard's fame. He can't imagine Edward being a fan of the devil who swore himself to humanity then bowed to the whim of a god who ordered him to reign hell. Edward would have raised it.
His eyes flick back to her, seeing her as wasted embers like the ash he's been flicking off his cigarette. Shame that even in hellholes like this, they still find ways to hate each other for useless shit. If all the pirates in the world could get the fuck along with each other for five fucking days, then there wouldn't be any navy to slaughter. But they're all too selfish, greedy, miserable and full of wrath.
" I knew Rackham. " For too many long years. He'd been a member of Hornigold's crew too, had set away from there with another ship in the fleet, made a name for himself on the tatters of other men's ambition. " He used to tear my shirts up. Piss in someone's drink for a laugh. Feeds off people like a parasite. "
Because for all his nauseating assholery, he's the best fucking manipulator Israel's ever met. He holds onto people, tangled them 'round 'til they don't even know they're being used.
" Clever though. Hides away under the smell of him. Probably picked you up 'cause he knew you had something worthwhile in you. " And beat Izzy to it. " He's allergic to pineapple. If you ever want to fuck with him. "
She’s glad, actually, and maybe even grateful when he doesn’t answer her idiot small talk. He’s a measured man; calm, collected, quiet. The stories never mention that. They mention him killing not just one men but several to join the devil’s crew, among other lurid tales of fires set and navymen cut down, but not his disquieting calm. Amongst the many eccentric pirates sailing these waters, that certainly makes Hands stand out. His approval is exciting, electric—and that makes it worse, somehow.
That makes it worse that he knows she’s with Jack. Like he knows like she does that Jack isn’t worth the spit it takes to say his name, that he’s a fraud taking credit for the work of others, that his are not works of genius but strokes of errant luck buoyed to the finish on the back of his truth-clouding arrogance. Anne stands up the straighter for it, crossing her arms and guarding her expression. She might not like the stupid arse anymore, but that doesn’t mean she’ll throw him to the sharks. He gave her her freedom back, a future, a berth: the least she can give him is a little loyalty in the face of a could-be assassin.
She’s grateful for the physical space Hands reestablishes, the distance she needs to regain her cool and remain cold to a man she’s so admired. “ Something like that, ” Anne agrees, speaking slowly. Jack had been impressed early on, had promised her a chance to run for an office aboard. That was two Articles ago, two chances to be more gone by in an unspoken, one-sides agreement to be “ of better service ” to Jack, to his planning. She isn’t dumb. She knows what’s going on.
But it’s like Jack’s even said before—who else is letting women sail aboard these waters?
“ I en’t a whore—not for cap’n and not for coin. Hope that don’t disappoint. But I en’t quite a sailor neither. ” She probably shouldn’t admit that to him, but…. Anne shrugs and turns her face away, towards the docks again, towards the sea. It’ll be too dark to see the water from this far away soon. “ Crew don’t like having a woman aboard. Waste daylight and energy checking shite I’d already seen to, me on Jack’s orders and them on their own suspicions. ” Anne huffs and looks back down the alley towards Hands. “ Eventually, the Cap’n stopped giving me sailing orders. So. ” Anne begins to count on her fingers, thumb first. “ I’m on his ship. I follow his rules. I earn my keep. But I en’t quite a sailor, no. ” Her hand falls to her side and she shrugs again.
There’s no chance at a career without Jack—not only has he said as much, but attempts to bond with his crew, as well as in taverns in ports, have driven the point home quite handily—but no chance at one with him, either. Anne’s lips twitch up into a sardonic smile despite her attempts to suppress it. It’s darkly humorous, in its way, and sharing her status as a non-sailor-entity has made her feel a bit bolder in sharing the truth.
“ I had a promising future as a lawyer ahead of me, once, ” she says, uncharacteristically candid about it. She laughs a little at the punchline before she even delivers it, angered and defeated by the truth of it all at once: “ And now I can’t even find work where I could steal it! ”
Fucking sad. Pathetic. A waste of potential only capable of blaming herself and fucking up in new and interesting ways. Anne laughs a little more, but it’s a humorless sound. It dies away and they exist for a moment or two in a reflective silence before Anne breaks back in.
“ You’re still with him, en’t ye? They he’s worse than the Devil hisself, twice as black and six times as cruel. And you’re a mate of Lucifer’s, not just his, and yer head can go all the way ‘round. ” Reverence and skepticism creep one behind the other through her tone as Anne watches the devil in the darkening alley, his glowing red tip brighter than the light of the now-absent sun. “ Is that right? ”

saw your post about tww s3e1 bc i follow the west wing tag and tbh i probably have seen that episode maybe 2 times? in all my rewatches i usually just skip to e2. i first watched tww when i was 18 and i think in my brain that episode is just boring (and ive always assumed racist) — is it worthwhile to watch? esp given current context?
In a current context? Maybe? It’s exactly as you probably remember it, but here’s a little summary of the episode.
A back and forth about terrorism to high school students regarding whether or not you kill all of these people or jail them. Explaining that an equivalent to Islamic Extermists is the KKK because of how they read their religious works while giving each of them (Josh, Toby, Sam and CJ) a different chance to speak on terrorism and how to handle it.
The especially racist part is the racial profiling done within the White House because someone has the same name as an alias of a known criminal. They put Leo at the forefront of that story line because he’s been our head champion for equality but also for protecting the president (also helps he’s old and white).
The show ends with the guy being let go with no charges held against him, Leo apologizing for profiling him and explicitly stating that it was profiling because he looked like the enemy.
(Here’s where it’s relevant and it’s like the last five minutes of the show and I basically tell you everything but Stockard Channing is brilliant so) Abby ends their side with the story of Isaac and Ishmael (name of the episode) of how Abraham wanted a kid, had an affair with Hagar for a kid and then his wife Sarah finally became pregnant (yearrsss later) so he banishes Ishmael and Hagar and keeps Isaac as his heir. It’s said then began the split of Islam from Judaism and the hatred (can’t think of a better word atm) of each group. But she makes a point to say that no matter what they both came together to bury their father.
Another note of relevance (and racism): they’re talking about the CIA and spies and a kid asks what do you call it if you live everyday with the idea that wherever you are can just be blown up out of nowhere and Sam replies with Israel
Also it has young Josh Zuckerman (also known as the young guy in Oppenheimer) and it’s worth seeing Josh pretend to hate him because the kid is smart. Also that one guy who was also in Zoey 101 for a couple episodes.
But honestly if you’re in the show for the story then it’s very skippable. I looked more into it and even the actors prefaced the episode saying this is a bit of a play and not at all part of the continuity of the show at large.

That finale.
Where do we go from here?
So historically, I was thinking, Israel Hands was a real person. Captained a ship alongside Blackbeard and Stede Bonnet. Got shot in the knee by Blackbeard.
Historically, there was a Republic of Pirates: Nassau. Historically it was destroyed by a former privateer: Woodes Rogers. In OFMD we have the fictional Prince Ricky filling the role of Rogers.
Historically, Rogers was in contact with Benjamin Hornigold, who hunted down pirates who escaped like Charles Vane and Blackbeard, who was settling down on Ocracoke Island in America.
So...
if Prince Ricky is in contact with Hornigold, who we have established as an existing person in the OFMD universe (in Ed's interactions with CJ and his presence in Ed's deathbed hallucinations) we could have, in a potential follow up to season two, Hornigold as a pirate hunter, going after Ed and Zheng Yi Sao. Our girl Zheng is hunting Prince Ricky. Ed and Stede as innkeepers are doing exactly what we established earlier this season didn't work for Anne and Mary. And they're whim prone people and the inn was a whim. They will get bored. Both of them. They will miss the crew - Izzy said it, piracy was about belonging, about community, and that's what at least Stede has been looking for, and I think Ed too - Ed was looking for a place where he could be this softer self who looks at fish scales and eats marmalade. And they were working on building that and they threw it away and I don't think that can last.

COLLISION 14/10/23
Setting foundations
Tumblr media
Collision opens with Adam Copeland who is here to address Christian's comments. Before the Rated R Superstar can speak, security make their way to the ring followed by Christian Cage. There is one enhanced talent in a brown suit. He looked important but didn't do anything noteworthy. Christian is still the best heel as he continues to be a real bastard. Bryan Danielson, Big Bill, Ricky Starks and the former champs, FTR come to the ring as everyone is ready to brawl. Starks and Adam take some fun shots at each other while Danielson demands the match for the TNT Championship right now. Of course, that doesn't happen because wrestlers should not have the power to demand such things. This was a criticism I had with Smackdown this past week. The commentators inform us that the main event will remain the main event. This was an enjoyable segment as it featured some of AEW top stars
SEQUE!!!
Due to the Israel-Hamas war there was some controversy last week when Juice Robinson threatened to hit MJF with a roll of quarters. I didn’t find this segment to be offensive. MJF being pelted with quarters has been a part of this character’s history. I merely saw this as Robinson taking a shot at a weak point in Max's life. Wrestling is also art, and art always reflects the climate we're in. AEW addressed this controversial segment where MJF and other leaders in sport met up to send a positive message regarding antisemitism. This showcased the real side of Max which was refreshing to see during this babyface run.
Samoa Joe defended his TV title against Willie Mack. I have no idea who Willie Mack is, but I liked what I saw. The match up was great as Joe and Mack are similar in size. At one point Mack leaped over the top rope and almost took out the announce table. Willie also gave us the unforgiving nipple twisters. There was also a point where Joe powerslammed Mack and it looked real rough. This was a bout worth checking out.
CJ Perry is backstage once again. She makes it clear she wants to manage. Action Andretti steps up and requests Perry's services. Perry doesn’t say yes or no, but giggles after he leaves. The excitement she emoted is that of a schoolgirl who finds out her crush likes her back. Later, Miro appears as he tosses Andretti's corpse to the side. He says, "I am willing to destroy every man to protect the one woman." which is weird. Didn't he want nothing to do with CJ? But at the same time, he doesn't want her to manage anyone. I find the whole thing strange, but it will be interesting to see who she lands with.
The Fallen Angel makes an appearance in gods knows how long. Man, I remember when he was featured with Kazarian and Scorpio Sky during the early days of AEW…any who, he is up against Juice Robinson. It was an okay match that added more heat onto Juice who promises to win the Dynamite Dozen Battle Royale so he can face MJF and take the ring. There was a mention of the man in the devil mask but no follow up from the people who attacked Jay yet.
Skye Blue is now a heel since she’s been sprayed by mist from Julia Hart. Blue took on Kris Statlander is a decent match. I’m always impressed by Statlander's strength. Of course, the TBS champion would retain, but I think it was important that Blue gets some character progression and there seems to be more to the story as Willow Nightingale came to the ring post-match to care of Blue as she told Statlander to leave.
Another good match was the Bryan Danielson versus Christian Cage for the TNT Championship in what felt like a real main event match. Danielson stretched Christian in horrific ways while the champ worked on Bryan's right arm. Ultimately Christian retained due to Big Bill and Ricky Starks getting involved. Also, due to the injured right arm, the LeBell Lock could not be used to its full effect.
There was so much going on in this show that I don’t have time to reflect on, but a lot of it was to build storylines. AEW needed to rework its foundation and start to mould it's show in a clear direction. It's just a matter of sticking with what they are presenting and follow through.
